The variety holds a strong symbolic meaning for the Cistercians. That is why they spread Pinot Noir also throughout numerous other European regions as well. The crushed gravelly soils south of Gobelsburg in Ried (single vineyard, cru) SACHSENBERG are ideal for the variety because the calcareous content allows for good drainage. Maturation of the wine lasts for 18 months in Austrian oak barrels and then for another 6 months in bottles. The wine is unfiltered and can show sediments.
Vintage 2018
ROBERT PARKER - The Wine Advocate: 93 points
It opens with a dark toast and beautifully spicy bouquet with citrus fruit and herbal notes refreshing the beautiful red and dark berry and venison aromas that intermingle with juniper and clove nuances. Silky, fresh and round on the palate, with some tart oak flavors yet fine tannins, this is an elegant, silky textured and perfectly balanced Pinot with fine yet firm tannins and a good, tight structure that lets enough juice run through to make up for a stimulating, digestible and food-friendly finish. This should be great with a saddle of venison.
Jancis Robinson: 17 points
Super-creamy, deep, ripe raspberry nose. Warm cinnamon and white-pepper spices fill the mid palate, stippling the silk-spun curve of fruit and smooth bevelled tannic lines. Pinewood smokiness of lapsang souchong in a low register. A fine lattice of dried herbs. Chiffon and evensong. (Tamlyn Currin)
