The variety holds a strong symbolic meaning for the Cistercians. That is why they spread Pinot Noir also throughout numerous other European regions as well. The crushed gravelly soils south of Gobelsburg are ideal for the variety because the calcareous content allows for good drainage. Maturation of the wine lasts for 18 months in Austrian oak barrels and then for another 6 months in bottles. The wine is unfiltered and can show sediments.
ROBERT PARKER - The Wine Advocate, 12/21 week 2: rating 93
Cold-macerated for five to six days and fermented with one-third whole clusters and two-thirds de-stemmed yet not crushed berries in an oak fermenter for about 14-15 days, the crimson-colored 2018 Pinot Noir Reserve was then aged in 600-liter Austrian barrels for a year and for another 9-10 months in large oak prior to the bottling after a total of 20 months. It opens with a dark toast and beautifully spicy bouquet with citrus fruit and herbal notes refreshing the beautiful red and dark berry and venison aromas that intermingle with juniper and clove nuances. Silky, fresh and round on the palate, with some tart oak flavors yet fine tannins, this is an elegant, silky textured and perfectly balanced Pinot with fine yet firm tannins and a good, tight structure that lets enough juice run through to make up for a stimulating, digestible and food-friendly finish. This should be great with a saddle of venison. 13% alcohol. Tasted at Schloss Gobelsburg in June 2021.
