The TRADITION wines from Schloss Gobelsburg draw on winemaking traditions from earlier eras. As a winery with a history spanning more than 850 years, we are committed not only to the wines of the present but also to the winemaking styles of the past. Wines from earlier eras were subject to different production conditions and different notions of what wine should be. If one traces the history of winemaking, one realizes that wine has always been an expression of its time and has evolved accordingly in response to trends and values.
The TRADITION wines from Schloss Gobelsburg are offered at various stages of maturity.
The TRADITION Heritage 3 Years corresponds to the classic style of the 19th century. During the Austrian Empire, the minimum aging period for wines was about 3 years before they were sold.
The style we seek to capture in the TRADITION Heritage 10-Year is rooted in the fact that there have always been wines that were aged significantly longer in the estate’s cellars and reserved for special occasions and celebrations.
With the 2026 vintage, Michael Moosbrugger marks the 855th vintage of the monastic winery. To celebrate this long-standing tradition and culture appropriately, the cellar team has crafted a special wine. This cuvée features “Tradition” wines from the winery’s past 30 years. Each year, reserves from every vintage were set aside in the cellar archive. These reserve wines were then used to create the anniversary wine.
The bottles of these reserve wines were cleaned, uncorked, and individually tasted by the cellar team to ensure they were ready to enjoy. The vintage lots were decanted separately into special containers and later blended by the cellar master into a wooden barrel.
